Wilma Johnson, 93 of Zeeland, formerly Hamilton, passed away June 2. She is survived by three sons, Bruce (Dawn) of Grand Rapids, Scott (Lorie) of Zeeland, and Gene (Suzan) of Denver, CO, seven grandchildren whom she adored; Jason (Gina), Joshua (Nikki), Brian (Kerri), Fauve (Marjorie), and Colin (Alyssa) Johnson, Sarah (Andrew) Essink, and Amy (Dan) Huyser, along with 18 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded into glory by her husband of 63 years, Ivan Johnson and her son, Rev. Jerry Johnson. Wilma was the last of her generation in her extended family, being predeceased by siblings Gerrit, Peter, and Marvin Van Kampen, Alma DeVries Tubergen, their spouses and all of Ivan’s 9 siblings plus their spouses.

Wilma was someone who never met a stranger, a trait that served her well whether working at the Hamilton Farm Bureau hardware store, volunteering at Love, INC after her retirement, or meeting new friends at the retirement communities where she has lived for the last 7 years. She was very dedicated to her family and made many sacrifices for them including working multiple jobs so her sons could get the education she always wished she had, or caring for her husband during his declining years until she physically no longer could and then sitting by his side daily for the last 6 months of his life.

Her Christian faith played an important role in Wilma’s life. She considered it her primary responsibility to be sure her children knew the Lord. For many years, Wilma had daily devotions, praying for each of her children and grandchildren by name. She was a member of the Hamilton Reformed Church her entire adult life.

A funeral service will take place at the Hamilton Reformed Church, 3554 Lincoln Rd (M-40), Hamilton, at 11:00 AM, Monday, June 6, with a visitation at the Church from 3:00-5:00 PM Sunday, June 5.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Wilma’s memory to the Hamilton Reformed Church Memorial Fund or a charity of your choice.
