Life Story / Obituary
Virginia Ruth Weenink entered into the larger life on December 23, 2024 after a full, faithful life marked by unconditional love, loyalty and longevity.
She was proceeded in death by her son James B. Weenink and spouse of 63 years Rev. Dr. Allan J. Weenink. She is survived by her sister Phyllis Huff; children John A. Weenink, Judith and Scott Schoonover, Rev. Dr. Jeffrey D. and Jeanne Weenink; grandchildren, Scott A. and Sara J. (Schoonover) and Gregory Betz, Jenneke E., Justyne J, and Jaime B. Weenink; great grandchildren Lucy and Kellan Betz.
Virginia was born on July 4, 1920 in Kalamazoo Michigan. She graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School, Western Michigan University (B.S.) and the University of Michigan (M.A.). She was an educator, clergy spouse and volunteer. She always put God first, Others second and self – last. Not only was she a loving Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother, she was also a "Camp Mom" to countless youngsters at Camp Westminster on Higgins Lake.
A life-long learner and educator, Virginia taught elementary school before her children were born, and was a co-founder and teacher of the First Presbyterian Church preschool for many years. She was a consummate cook and hostess, playing a vital behind the scenes role in the various congregations she and Allan served. Virginia and Allan were active in the mission field. A legacy of those years of service is the Virginia R. Weenink Pre-School in Mindanao, Philippines. She and Allan visited every continent except Antarctica. Virginia volunteered with Hospice of Holland for 30 years, was active in P.E.O., HASP, Presbyterian Women Circle, and The Prayer Shawl Ministry. When not on the go, she knitted over 200 prayer shawls. Virginia lived a life of gratitude and love and reveled in the beauty experienced everyday on the shores of Lake Michigan in "Pinecrest", the home she and Allan treasured.
The family of Virginia Weenink would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the caring and compassionate staff of Trinity Hospice of Grand Haven.
A celebration of her faithful, well lived life will take place on Thursday, January 9th at 11:00am at First Presbyterian Church, 508 Franklin Ave, Grand Haven. A one-hour visitation will take place prior to the service starting at 10:00am.
Memorial gifts can go to the Allan J. and Virginia R. donor advised fund through the Presbyterian Foundation.
