Life Story / Obituary
Verna Mae Berens, age 77, of Hamilton, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on December 7, 2024.
Verna Mae was born February 3, 1947, in Allegan, MI to Willis and Hilda (Albers) Lampen.
Verna Mae is survived by her husband, Ken, of 57 years and children: Connie (Bryan) Immink of Dorr, MI, Mike (Kammi) Berens of Troy, MI, and Vicki Berens of Hamilton; grandchildren: Gracie Immink, Grant (Tsinat) Immink, Abbey (Nate) Martin, Gabe Steffey, Bella Beisel (Will Binder), Olivia Beisel; great grandchildren: Klayton Martin, Sawyer Martin, Zadok Immink; chosen daughter: Deb Fortney; brothers: Wayne (Jane) Lampen, Darwin (Linda) Lampen; brother-in-law: Duane (Marlene) Berens; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by sisters: Joyce (Floyd) Boerman, and Faith (Myron) Hoffman.
Verna Mae was a founding member of Hamilton CRC and an organist there for many years.
She graduated from Holland Christian High School in 1965 and from Chic University of Cosmetology in 1966. She worked at Ottie’s Beauty Shop. Then later she did hair from home. Ken and Verna Mae owned Dutch Treat Restaurant in Hamilton 1985-1999. She then went to truck driving school and ran doubles with Ken. Later she went to work for her daughter at Vicki’s Family Diner in Douglas, MI. Verna Mae loved traveling the world to hunt and fish with Ken. They both served with Lakeshore Quest Ministries and had great love for both the special need youth hunters and the Purple Heart veteran hunters they sponsored to experience a hunt of a lifetime at Two Hats Ranch.
Verna Mae had such enthusiasm for life and strived to reflect the love of Jesus to everyone she met. She will be dearly missed by everyone who loved her.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, December 14, 2024, at Hamilton CRC, 3596 47th Street, Hamilton, MI 49419. Reverend Dean Hulce will be officiating with Skipper Bettis participating in the service. Family and friends are invited to a brief committal service in Riverside – Hamilton Cemetery immediately following the service. A light lunch at the church will be prepared after the graveside.
Visitation will be from 4-7 pm, Friday, December 13, 2024, at Hamilton CRC and from 10-10:45 am prior to the service at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Lakeshore Quest Ministries, 3138 48th Street, Hamilton, MI 49419. Arrangements are by Dykstra Funeral Homes – Mulder Chapel.
