Sophia Vander Kallen, 88 of Holland, Michigan passed away peacefully June 1, 2020 with her son Richard (Rick) and daughter in law, Dawn by her side.

Sophia was born in Leiden, the Netherlands October 2, 1931 to Wilhemina and Arie de Lange. She lived through the hardships of World War II and worked in the family store after school. On July 26, 1956 she married the love of her life, William (Bill) Vander Kallen in a double wedding with her good friend and cousin Ida Johanna van Galen, and Hans Koopier. Together the four of them came to the United States on January 2, 1957. They landed at Idlewild New York and made their way to Holland which became home for more than 60 years.

Sophia, Fini, Mom, or Oma, however you knew her you know she was a kind soul. She was a devoted wife, mother, and friend. Along with Bill, she raised three sons, Mike, Bill Jr., and Rick. In the retirement years she enjoyed taking the motorhome South for the winter with her husband Bill, and even brought a stray dog home from Georgia once, and named her Lady.

She was passionate about animals and especially fond of her four grandchildren. She took advantage of every opportunity to spend time with them. She loved going to Kyle’s little league and lacrosse games, Kara’s orchestra concerts and sporting events, Grant’s plays and band concerts, and Jamie’s choir concerts.

For many years she could be seen walking her little dog Tootsie. She continued walking by herself after Tootsie passed away up until she moved into assisted living in March of 2019 where she continued to touch the hearts of people and made many friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband William Vander Kallen, brother Jon de Lange, sister Ida de Lange (Vanden Kommer), parents, and many dear friends.

Sophia is survived by her son Michael (Barb) of Grandville and their children Kara and Grant, son William (Leslie Workman) of Grand Rapids, and son Richard (Dawn) and their children Kyle and Jamie.

A private family graveside service will be held in Graafschap Cemetery with Rev. Todd Van Grouw presiding. An open house style celebration of life will be held at Rick and Dawn’s residence: 555 Azalea Avenue, Holland Michigan 49423 from 3:00 pm – 7:00 pm Friday, June 12, 2020.
