Life Story / Obituary
Shirley May O’Brien, age 90 of Zeeland died Sunday, February 5,2012 at Holland Community Hospital.
Born June 19, 1921 in Bay Shore, MI. Shirley was the oldest of seven children and daughter of Georgia and Arthur Burnett. She graduated from Petoskey High School in 1939.
She was manager of Operator Services of Mi. Bell for 25 years in Petoskey as well as a member of United Church of Christ.
Following her retirement she moved to Holland where she was a member of First Ref. Church and spent many years involved in the Care Closet Ministries. She was also a member of Evergreen Commons where she played the piano for lunch and special events.
She was preceded in death by her husband Ernest Lee O’Brien in 1990 and daughter Hope Rigg in 2009.
She is survived by daughter, Norma (William ) Ashby of Zeeland, Step children, Marian (Richard) Smith of Petoskey, Jane Zipp of Whitehall, Mi. grandchildren, Seth (Miriam) Ashby, Benjamin (Kimberly) Ashby, Tina (Mark) Foltz , Renee ( Arthur) Faustman, Corrine Smith , Lauree (Wayne) Kirchoff, Step grandchildren, Michael and Marilyn Bailey, Mark and Pamela Bailey, Matthew Bailey as well as several great and great great grandchildren, sisters; Zoe (Ed) Stanek of Alpena, MI., Dolores (Roy) Cain of Charlevoix, MI. Mazie (Pete) Sowles of Midland, MI., sisters-in-law, Joan Burnett of Cheboygan, MI., Dorothy Burnett of Petoskey, Theresa O’Brien of Detroit as well as many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, 5:00PM at First Reformed Church, 630 State St. Holland with Dr. Daniel Gillett officiating.Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Petoskey, MI.
Friends may call on the family 3:30 to 5:00 prior to the service.
A service in Petoskey, MI. will be held Thursday 2:00PM at the Stone Funeral Home, 2098 East Mitchell St., Petoskey with Rev. Darrell Koopmans officiating. Visitation in Petoskey will be Thursday 12:00 - 2:00PM prior to the service at the chapel.
Memorial gifts may be given to ; Care Closet at First Refomed Church.
