Life Story / Obituary


Shirley Yvonne Knowles (Kammeraad) age 89 of Holland, passed away on Monday, April 10, 2023. She was born November 29, 1933, to Florence and John Kammeraad. Shirley was the second of five children in her family. She had an older sister Barb and younger brothers Don, Jim, and Paul. She is survived by her brother Don. Shirley graduated from Holland High School and worked as a secretary at General Electric. In 1956, she married the love of her life, Bill (Thomas) Knowles. Together, Shirley and Bill raised three children: Sherry, Tom, and Kurt. Shirley loved being a mom, loved cooking and baking and spending time with extended family and friends. She also loved to travel, so in later years she and Bill hit the road in their RV with the goal of visiting each part of the country. Many of the trips were taken with her brother Don and his wife Barb, with numerous visits to Florida.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Bill in 2022 and her daughter Sherry Vander Ploeg in 2004. Surviving are her sons, Thomas (MaryAnn) Knowles II, Kurt (Pam) Knowles, former son-in-law Curt (Tammy) Vander Ploeg and their families; brother, Don (Barb) Kammeraad; nephews, nieces, and cousins.

Funeral services will be 1pm Monday (April 17) at Fellowship Reformed Church, 2165 Lakewood Blvd. Burial will be in Lakewood Cemetery. Visitation is 2-4 pm Sunday (April 16) at Dykstra Funeral Home-Northwood Chapel, 295 Douglas Avenue.
