Life Story / Obituary
Roger A. DeGraaf, a man of deep faith, love, and dedication, passed away peacefully on August 16, 2024, at the age of 91. Born on May 21, 1933, Roger lived a life that exemplified commitment to his family, his faith, and his community.
Roger was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Florence “Pokey” DeGraaf, with whom he shared many years of love and companionship. Together, they blended into a strong and loving family. He is survived by his wife and children: David DeGraaf (Becky Sims), Kenneth DeGraaf (Penny Souza), Mike DeGraaf (Colleen DeGraaf), Brian DeGraaf (Jill Jahnke), Philip Busman (Mary), Paul Busman (Denise), Kent Busman (Jill), Kurtis Busman and Cindy Busman. Roger was a proud grandfather to14 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren, all of whom brought immense joy to his life. Roger is also survived by his sister, Marcia DeGraaf. He was preceded in death by his brother, Don DeGraaf and parents, Martin & Katherine DeGraaf.
A proud graduate of Union High School, Roger furthered his education at Calvin College and Michigan State University, earning degrees that would serve as the foundation for his distinguished career in academia. He served his country with honor as a member of the Army National Guard before embarking on a lifelong passion for teaching. As a Life Sciences Professor at Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC), Roger was a respected and beloved educator, influencing countless students throughout his tenure.
After retiring from teaching, Roger ventured into business with his son Mike, where they established Rockford Self Storage, a successful partnership that allowed him to remain active and engaged in the community.
Roger’s strong Christian faith was the cornerstone of his life. As a dedicated attendee of the 3rd Christian Reformed Church in Zeeland, he lived out his faith in every aspect of his life. His love for God and his country was evident to all who knew him.
A funeral service to honor and celebrate Roger’s life will be held on Monday, August 26th, at 3rd Christian Reformed Church 10 W Central Ave, Zeeland MI. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., funeral service at 11am and a luncheon to follow.
Roger A. DeGraaf’s legacy of faith, love, and service will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know him. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Gateway Mission of Holland, 661 E. 24th St. Holland, MI, 49423.
