Life Story / Obituary
David Paul Breen, age 63, entered peacefully into the presence of Jesus surrounded by his family on June 1, 2013 from complications related to carcinoid cancer.
Born to Peter and Pauline Breen on Jan. 10, 1950, in Holland, MI, He attended schools in Fremont and Grand Rapids. Graduated from Hope College and Western Theological Seminary in Holland, MI. Served as pastor at Southridge Reformed Church in Portage, Beechwood Reformed Church in Holland, FairHaven Ministries and Sunrise Ministries in Hudsonville. He also served in an administrative position for the denomination of the Reformed Church In America.
Dave had a passion for youth and spent much time nurturing and mentoring them to be faith leaders in their churches and communities. He began a specialized program called Young Seekers for young people to begin their spiritual journey and commitment to Christ in a personal way.
Dave also had a heart for the hurting. His door was always open to anyone in need of care and counsel. He began a ministry for hurting church leaders called Leader Renewal Institute.
But his first love was his family. He was a devoted husband, father and "papa." Dave loved going to Hope College basketball games with his son and grandchildren. He enjoyed the Detroit Tigers and we cherish the memory of our last family outing to a game in a suite at Comerica Park.
Preceded in death by father-in-law, Edward De Boer and sister-in-law, Barbara De Boer.
Survived by wife, Linda Sue(De Boer) Breen, Children, Leah and Kent DeYoung, Rachel and Chad Chapman, David and Heather Breen. Grandchildren, Lydia De Young and Makenzie, Jakob and Lukas Chapman (all of Hudsonville).
Also survived by his parents, Reverend Peter and Pauline Breen, his brother and sisters, Reverend Stephen and Linda Breen of Orange City, IA, Mary and Dr Jim Veldkamp, Ruth and Robert Stacey, Beth and Jim Koerner, all of Grand Rapids. Mother-in-law, Jeanette De Boer, brothers and sisters-in-law, Edward De Boer, Patricia and Rick Van De Burg, all of Holland, Paul and Pamela De Boer of Glenn Ellyn, IL. Many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
We wish to thank the staff and palliative care team of Spectrum Health Butterworth for their wonderful care. Also special thanks to Dr James Samuelson for his professional care but also for sharing with Dave his commitment to the poor and broken.
Funeral services will be held at 4 pm Friday at the Beechwood Reformed Church, 895 Ottawa Beach Road, with the Rev. Dr. Timothy Brown, Rev. Timothy Breen, and Rev. Stephen Breen officiating.
Burial will be in Lakewood Cemetery.
Visitation will be 6-9 pm Wednesday and 2-4 and 6-9 pm Thursday at Beechwood Reformed Church.
In Lieu of flowers donations may be made to Sunrise Ministries and Benjamin's Hope.
