Nick Staat, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on December 5, 2024, at the age of 83, just as he had always hoped.

Nick is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Karen; his children, Shelly Staat and Jeff Sell, Mike and Diana Staat, and Brenda Staat-Tomlinson; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; his brother Jim Staat; and his sisters Rose Bush and Irene Wagner. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Esther Staat; his siblings, John Staat, George Staat, Lawrence Staat, Jo Busscher, Lu Meyer, Hazel Vander Wal, Neal Staat, and David Staat; and his grandson, Ian Tomlinson.

Nick was known for his integrity, hard work, and generosity. A proud U.S. Army veteran who served before the Vietnam War, Nick went on to work as a supervisor at General Electric. In the mid-70’s, he started Nick’s Farm Drainage, a business he poured his heart into, enjoying the opportunity to work the land and connect with Michigan’s farmers. “Most days in the dirt” were his best days.

Nick was a lifelong member of North Holland Reformed Church, where he faithfully served in various ways. His love for life shone brightly, and he made it his mission to bring joy to others, often saying that if he could make someone smile or laugh, it was a really good day.

Spring was Nick’s favorite season, but in recent years, he marveled at the beauty of Michigan’s autumn colors, declaring that fall, too, was a favorite. Beyond his love for nature, Nick’s second passion was food, followed by fishing. He found immense joy in smoking salmon and sharing it with family and friends, a simple yet profound act of love that reflected his generous spirit.

Nick lived a life full of purpose, gratitude, and laughter. Everywhere he went he ran into someone he knew. He leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness, and his memory will continue to bring smiles to the faces of those who were blessed to know him.

A visitation will take place on Tuesday, December 10 from 5-7pm at North Holland Reformed Church, 12050 New Holland St. Holland. A funeral service will take place on Wednesday, December 11 at 11:00am with a one-hour visitation prior to the service, also at North Holland Reformed Church. Burial will take place at Zeeland Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Tunnel To Towers, or North Holland Reformed Church.

For those who were unable to attend the service in person, a live-stream is available HERE
