Meredith Jay Bruischat, age 98, passed away Tuesday morning, March 16, 2021. He always went by Jay. His legal name did lead to confusion at times.

From the age of 12 until his death he played guitar and sang. He was a country western troubadour. Unchaperoned dating was not allowed when he met the love of his life, Dorothy. They were married for 74 years until her death in 2020. He would bring his guitar and walk to her house. Their dates were him playing music for her. They met while both taking music lessons. When the world was at war for the second time, he was drafted. He served honorably for 2 ½ years in New Guinea. Upon his return to Holland, after marrying his wife, he took advantage of the GI Bill and went to Ferris State to study refrigeration. He had his own service company for decades after that. Later in life, upon wintering in the south, there was nothing he enjoyed more than going to a jam session. In The Valley of Texas he would attend several a week. He was also a square dance caller for many years. Both here in West Michigan and for a number of years in Tucson Arizona.

He was committed and steadfast to the fullest measure in doing what is right. Flawed yes, but aren’t we all? A good and decent man. An honorable man. He lived a simple life. He had a good long life and will be missed.

He is now home once again with his beloved Dottie. Some might say he died of a broken heart. Heaven has another singer to add to the choir.

He is survived by 4 sons, 6 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will take place on March 30, 2021 at 11:00am at Pilgrim Home Cemetery, 370 E 16th St. in Holland.
