Life Story / Obituary
Mary Mannakee, age 78 of Holland, passed away Monday, August 8, 2022.
Mary was stylish, uniquely graceful and had deep friendships. Poised and a lover of beauty in all nature, she was equally at home in fancy restaurants and at the farm in muck boots. She volunteered with animals and kids, and her early career in elementary education gave her a deep insight into children. All ages loved her and she loved them.
To know Mary was to know style and grace, gentleness and fierce passion, a profound connection to the natural world and a commitment to holding true to her convictions and beliefs, all wrapped in a playful sense of humor and sharp wit.
She used to say that it seems like God had appointed her “Keeper of the Animals”, as it seemed injured, hurt and stray animals were always finding her. She was continually good-natured about it and helped to rehabilitate creatures from stray dogs to seagulls. She was an avid gardener, naturalist and her favorite place to be was on the beach, feet in the water, face in the sun.
Although much of her life was spent in the Chicago area, she loved western Michigan where she spent her last 20 years. She is survived by her husband, Evan Mannakee; brothers, John Owens, Tom Owens and Blaine Owens, daughter Emily (Mannakee) Pineda; grandchildren, Zola and Leandro; nieces Sarah and Abby, and nephews Jonathan and Jeffrey.
