Life Story / Obituary

Marilyn Segard Chamberlain passed away on June 18,2024 in Holland, Michigan after a long wonderful life.

She was born on June 13, 1932 in Grand Rapids Michigan to John and Grace Segard and had a half-brother from her father’s first marriage.

She graduated from Ottawa Hills High School in Grand Rapids and married Newton Lawrence Chamberlain on June 13, 1953. Her father had asked her to wait to marry until she was 21 and so she got married on her 21st birthday.

She and Newt had three children, twins, Robin Musselman and Tom (John) Chamberlain and daughter Amy Sasamoto.

Through Newt’s job the family moved several times; living at various times in Michigan, Connecticut and Georgia. After retirement they made their home in Holland, Michigan living in their cottage at their beloved Idlewood Beach. They spent the winters in Florida until Newt’s death in 2012.

Marilyn was a wonderful mother who always supported her family in many ways. She was an active church member in whatever city they resided. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Holland where she served as both a deacon and an elder. One of her greatest joys was being part of the church choir, she had a beautiful singing voice.Marilyn’s compassion and determination led her to help countless numbers of people throughout her life. In 1992 Marilyn realized a lifetime goal of achieving a BA degree from Hope College. Marilyn and Newt were able to travel the world during their 59 years of marriage.Marilyn was a loving grandmother to her five grandchildren, always making sure there were plenty of homemade cookies available. No grandchild ever left Marilyn’s home without a cookie in each hand.

She is survived by her children Robin Chamberlain Musselman, Amy Chamberlain Sasamoto and husband Edward Sasamoto, John Thomas Chamberlain and husband Miguel Ernesto Bermudez, grandchildren, Luke Musselman and wife Ashley, Kate Sasamoto and husband Tim Owen, Coby Musselman O’Sullivan and husband Mike, Ben Sasamoto and wife Joanne Powell, and Emma Sasamoto and fiance Devin Riley.

She is also survived by great grandchildren, Avery Musselman, Logan Musselman, Miles Musselman, Evie O’ Sullivan and Finn Owen.

The family would like to thank the caring staff at both Resthaven Maplewoods Cottages and Hospice of Holland for providing compassionate care for the last years of Marilyn’s life. A family memorial service will be held at a later date.
