Marguerite Teninga

Marguerite Mae (Vermurlen) Teninga, age 99, passed away peacefully at home on July 20, 2023, surrounded by family.

Marguerite was born in Pentwater, Michigan, and moved to Holland when she was 10. She graduated from Holland High School in 1942 and worked that summer on the Great Lakes steamer S.S. Alabama.

After the years of raising her family and tending to others, the highlight of her day was her morning coffee with her sister Kathleen. She also loved puttering in her yard, tending to her roses, and walking her little dog Ted (Teddy Bear).

Marguerite lived a full, happy life and will be very deeply missed.

She was preceded in death by her parents Cornelius T. (Claude) and Gertrude M. (Pierce) Vermurlen, first husband Robert Schoonard, second husband Lewis Teninga, sister Kathleen Pathuis, brothers Earl Vermurlen and C. Thomas (Dorothy) Vermurlen, and nephews Thomas and Christian Vermurlen.

She is survived by her daughters Claudia (Gary) Shosten and Cynthia Hernandez; grandchildren Daniel (Janelle) Schamper, Rebecca (Chadrick) Mahaffey, Rachel (Dave) Snyder, Matthew Swieringa, John (Kim) Swieringa, and Amy Swieringa; great-grandchildren Liberty Mahaffey, Cole Mahaffey, Jordon Swieringa, Lindsey Swieringa, and Greta Julius; nieces Kathy (Bob) Sanger, Mary Ann Pathuis, and Norma Tenbrink; nephews Fred (Mary) Pathuis, C. Timothy (Ann) Vermurlen, and Patrick (Sherry) Vermurlen; and cousin Edward (Buddy) Vermurlen.

The funeral service will be held Friday, July 28 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of the Lake Church (480 152nd Ave. Holland, MI), with visitation one hour prior (10 to 11 a.m.). Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association and Harbor Humane Society.
