Life Story / Obituary

Madge M Torrey, 89, of Holland died peacefully at Appledorn Assisted Living North on Tuesday July 12, 2016. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 62 years, Gerald (aka) Jerry and sister Marilyn(Jerry) and her parents, Herschel and Eva (Cramer) Mikesell.

She was born June 14, 1927 in Flint MI and graduated from Flint Central High School. Madge and Jerry were married Dec. 26, 1945 when she was only 18 and she worked at Knapps in Lansing while husband Jerry attended MSU. She often bragged about moving 20 times in her 89 years. Over the years, Madge and Jerry loved going to swim meets to support Mike, visiting Kathy and her family in Seattle, special Sundays with Karen, traveling, pontoon boat rides on the lake, playing cribbage, doing crossword puzzles, golfing, biking and spending time with family and friends.

She is lovingly survived by her children, Mike (Kathy) Torrey, Karen Torrey of Holland, and Kathy Torrey of Kirkland WA, six grandchildren, Kristin Torrey, Nashville TN, Sara(Elliott) Lowe, Grand Rapids, Joshua (Sarah) Baba, Renton WA, Michelle Baba, Woodinville WA and Kimberly & Daniel Baba, Seattle WA, two great grandchildren, Avery and Hudson Lowe, 2 brother in laws, Paul (Geraldine) Clio MI and Don (Betty) Torrey FL and many Prosser nieces and nephews from her sister Marilyn and her husband Jerry.

After her husband died in 2007, she found joy in volunteering at the Holland Rescue Mission and enjoyed the company of her friends in Saugatuck, at Orchard Park Condominiums and The Village of Appledorn West. We thank all her friends who continued to visit after she moved to the Appledorn Assisted Living North building and the loving care she received from Hospice of Holland and Appledorn North staff.

A Memorial service and celebration of her life will be held Thurs. Aug 25 at 11am at All Saints Episcopal Church, 252 Grand St. and Hoffman in Saugatuck MI with Fr. Corwin Stoppel officiating. Visitation and memory sharing on Wed. Aug 24, 5:30-7:30 pm and 1 hr before the service.

In lieu of flowers, please send memorial contributions to Hospice of Holland or Ottawa County Community Mental Health.

Arrangements by Dykstra Funeral Home-Mulder Chapel with an online registry to record memories, photos etc. at www.dykstrafuneralhome.com

We will always remember Madge’s strong spirit and her “telling it like it was”.

Madge asked us to finish with “see you on the flip side-K.I.S.S.”
