Lois J. Karsten, age 79 of Kalamazoo and formerly of Holland, died Tuesday, January 9, 2007 at Heartland Health Center of Kalamazoo. Lois was born June 25, 1927 in Holland to Louis and Florence (Bittner) Van Ingen. Lois attended Holland schools and received her Bachelors degree from Hope College in 1949. She later received her Masters in English from Michigan State University. Lois married David P.Karsten on March 24, 1951. Lois taught elementary school for Hudsonville, Kalamazoo and West Ottawa School systems and she and her husband David taught in Yakutat, Alaska from 1952 until 1959. Lois is survived by her daughter, Barbra (John) Karsten- Rose of Westland, MI, a brother Donald "Dutch" (Rosemarie) Van Ingen of Novi, MI, a granddaughter, Adrianna Rose, nieces, Pam Courtright, Lisa Mummey, Tracey Farrell and Jill Karsten, nephews, Mark Van Ingen, Kurt Karsten, and Scott Karsten. Lois was preceded in death by her husband, David in 1998 and her sister Barbara Van Hoven. The family will receive friends, 11:00 A.M Saturday at the Mulder Chapel of Dykstra Life Story Funeral Homes, 188 W. 32nd St. Holland. Funeral services will follow the visitation period at 12 noon Saturday, at the Mulder Chapel, Rev. Gordon Wiersma of Hope Reformed Church, officiating.
