Leslie Owen Van Hekken, age 86, of Holland passed away unexpectedly Thursday night, August 22, 2013 at his home.

Les was a member of Fellowship Reformed Church where he served as a deacon had a large part in constructing different areas of the church on the building committee. He was a veteran of the US Navy serving during WWII. He was member of the American Legion. Les owned Ottawa Beach Marina, and worked as a self-employed contractor before working for Elzinga and Volkers and Lakewood Construction as a construction superintendent, a family trade taught to him by his father. He loved hunting, fishing, golf and working with his hands. He enjoyed listening to baseball games and attending Hope College Basketball games. He was preceded in death by his father and mother Martin and Minnie Van Hekken and his siblings Marvin, Marilyn, Donald and Johnny.

He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years Arlene and children: Doug and Karen Van Hekken of Holland, Dave and Lynn Van Hekken of Holland, Craig and Connie Van Hekken of Holland, Christy and Ed Baker of Howard City, Steve and Stacey Vande Vusse of Holland, Barb DePree of Hamilton; 15 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; brothers: Jerry and Kay Van Hekken of Holland, Jim and Sara Van Hekken of Holland; sisters-in-law:

Barbara Bolks of Holland, Elaine Phillips of Whitehall, Ohio; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and many, many friend.s

A funeral service with military honors will be 11:00 AM, Tuesday, August 27, 2013 at Fellowship Reformed Church 300 N. 168th Avenue in Holland.

Reverend James Baar will be officiating.

Burial will be in Lakewood Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8 PM, Monday, August 26, 2013 at Fellowship Reformed Church. Memorial contributions may be given to Fellowship Reformed Church – Building Fund.
