It is with great sadness that the family of Lee Mannes (aka “Captain Sundae”, pictured right) announces his passing on Wednesday, August 4, at the age of 86. Lee will be lovingly remembered by his friends and family, including dear friend Jack Burke (pictured left), sister Pearl Harter, brother Paul Mannes, sisters-in-law Jo Mannes and Nina Mannes, nephews and nieces Gregg (Elaine) Mannes, Jeff (Anna Mae) Mannes, Jamie (Tom) VanderHenst, Jodi (Tim) Gerrits, Erik (Libby) Mannes, Michelle (Chad) Haverdink, Amy (Rick) Beckman, and Ben (Jeff) Mannes.

Lee was preceded in death by his parents, LJ and Sue Mannes, his brothers Ken and Larry Mannes, brother-in-law Orin Harter, and nephews Kim Mannes and Steve (Carolyn) Mannes. Lee was born in Holland, Michigan, on November 11, 1934, and graduated from Holland High School and attended Moody Bible Institute. He was an entrepreneur with a kind and creative soul who established Colonial Acres Furniture and, most notably, was the founder of Captain Sundae, which he started in 1980 and ran for 20 years before retiring and selling the business. We’re grateful to Lee for his vision of Captain Sundae, which has brought lots of special memories to so many in the community (stretching all the way to Chicago!) for decades. A legacy of love and ice cream!

His storytelling, generous nature, and sense of humor will be greatly missed.

No funeral service or visitation is planned per Lee’s wishes. Treat yourself to an ice cream at Captain Sundae and think of Lee. We will miss you Captain Sundae!

Arrangements are by the Dykstra Funeral Home-Mulder Chapel.
