He was born in German Valley, Illinois on October 24, 1923. After high school graduation he entered the United States Army Air Corps. He was a proud World War II veteran and served in the Pacific Theatre for three years. He served as an aircrew mechanic and radio operator on cargo planes flying in combat. The battles and campaigns he flew in include New Guinea, North Solomons, Bismark Archipelago, the Western Pacific and the South Philippines. LaVerne's decorations and citations include the Air Medal with (3) Oak Leak Clusters and the 5th Air Force Distinguished Flying Cross. LaVerne left the Army Air Corp as a Staff Sergeant. He met the love of his life (Connie Scholten) and they were married in 1948. The two were happily married for 70 years. They settled in Holland in 1978 and were longtime members of Westshore Christian Church. LaVerne was gifted with his hands and built his own home. He could fix anything and did so for many neighbors and friends. He enjoyed watching the Detroit lions, Detroit Tigers, Detroit Pistons and the Miami Dolphins. He was loved by everyone that knew him and he will truly be missed.

LaVerne is survived by his son, Gordon Bawinkel; grandchildren, Katie (Rob) Harmsan, Kristie Johnson, Brian (Elizabeth Whiting) Bawinkel; nine great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 70 years, Mrs. Connie Bawinkel.
