Joann Slotman, age 83, of Holland, passed away Saturday, September 11, 2021 at Appledorn Assisted Living Center.

Born in Herminie, PA, to Jacob and Mary (Futcher) Beyrand, Joann met her future husband, Harvey, when he was in the Army and stationed at the Nike Air Base in Herminie.

They were married in 1960. After spending a few years near Joann’s family, Harvey was deployed to serve in Korea, and Joann and their first-born son moved to Saugatuck, Harvey’s hometown. When Harvey returned from overseas, the family relocated to Columbus, GA, while Harvey was stationed at Fort Benning.

When Harvey was discharged from the Army, the family moved to Saugatuck, and Joann became a full-time homemaker. One of the loves of Joann’s life was taking care of children, so she proudly became they first licensed babysitter in Holland. It was rare for there to not be a couple children in the home that Joann lovingly “sat” for while at the same time raising her own three young children. To supplement income, Joann took jobs outside the home such as Hope College’s dining service. But she never strayed from her real passion, childcare, and ended her working career in the early 90’s at Holland’s Grace Church Infant Care Center. She was very hands on with the infants for whose care she was responsible. But that was Joann: a very loving, maternal figure to her own children and to the community’s. Joann put in many hours of volunteering with the DAV and the auxiliary. She was a member of the Saugatuck United Methodist Church where she served in various aspects of the church. Joann loved listening to Elvis Presley music and could be found at Elvis impersonator events.

Harvey preceded her in death in January 2020.

She is survived by her children: Harvey Slotman Jr. of Holland, Terry (Jack) Overbeek of Holland, and David (Amy) Slotman of Byron Center; grandchildren: Zachary Slotman, Hayley (Brett) Weldy; great-grandson: Benson Weldy; sister-in-law: Nancy Thompson; several nieces and nephews.

A memorial graveside service will be 3:00 pm, Monday, October 4, 2021 at Restlawn Memorial Gardens, 994 Paw Paw Drive, Holland, MI 49423.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Ottawa Area Intermediate School District - Early Childhood.
