Joan Myra Kortering, 92, of Holland, Michigan is enjoying the beautiful gardens and singing hymns in Heaven. She passed away Sunday, May 23, 2021 peacefully in her sleep at Vista Springs Holland Meadows, originally part of the Kortering family farm.

Joan was born August 24, 1928 in Holland to Peter and Christine (Wolfert) Tuinsma. After graduating from Holland High School, Joan work for Holland Furnace then attended Mercy Central School of Nursing at St. Mary’s in Grand Rapids and became a registered nurse. She traveled with nursing friends for some time before returning to Holland and joining the staff at Holland Hospital as a pediatrics nurse. On June 6, 1958 she married Ronald D. Kortering of Holland and joined him in farming. They had 2 daughters: Sally (Steven) Hyma and Susan (John) Szczurek. She was blessed with 4 grandchildren: Melissa (Anthony) Self, Robert Hyma, Jonathan Szczurek, and Luke Szczurek. She had one great grandson, Derek Self. Joan was a member of Ebenezer Reformed Church.

Joan is survived by 2 sisters: Betty Bussies, and Connie DePond; sister-in-law Mary Tuinsma; nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald (2006) and brother Jack (2007).

Joan will be remembered as “a sweet lady” by those who knew her. She shared a smile and kind word to those around her. She enjoyed gardening and her beautiful flowers, singing hymns, and being outside to enjoy the sunshine.

Special thanks to the staff at Lakeshore Senior Care, Holland Hospital, and Vista Springs Holland Meadows for your wonderful care and love for Mom. Also, a big thank you to her wonderful neighbors and friends who were always there.

A funeral service will take place at Dykstra Funeral Homes-Mulder Chapel, 188 West 32nd Street on Thursday, May 27 at 11:00am with a 1-hour visitation prior to the service.
