Life Story / Obituary

James Patrick Sullivan passed away on September 15, 2025, in Holland, Michigan. He was born September 8th, 1944, in Cambridge Massachusetts, to Elizabeth (née McCarthy) and Timothy Dennis Sullivan, of Tipperary and Castletownbere, Cork, Ireland, respectively.

He was a loving father, husband, and grandfather as well as a retired English Professor at Saginaw Valley State University, where he taught courses in English Language & Literature and Linguistics for over thirty years. A socio-linguist by training, he was especially passionate about the Great Books, Irish literature, poetry and theatre. An avid reader and writer, he spent much of his time doing both, though nothing was more important to him than his family.

A true Bostonian, he was raised in Fields Corner, Dorchester, attended Catholic Memorial High School and Boston University. His graduate studies took him to Yeshiva University and the New School of Social Research in New York.

His love of research and travel took him, often with family in tow, around the country and regularly to Ireland and Italy, where he introduced dozens of first generation college students to Italian literature, food and culture. He was beloved in Ireland, and leaves behind dozens of family and friends there. An extended European trip with his sons has become the stuff of family legend. His intellect was matched by his humor and he enjoyed an evening watching the Marx Brothers with family as much as political and intellectual debate.

His intellectual curiosity was balanced by the joy he took in the challenges of fixing and maintaining the practical stuff of life. These included an endless parade of used cars the family enjoyed over decades and a series of ever-collapsing tents on camping trips to Cape Cod and Lake Michigan. A scholar who replaced the roof of the family home, his sense of accomplishment extended beyond his publications.

He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Kathleen Sullivan, his four children: Elizabeth Sullivan, Katherine Sullivan and her husband Jacob Guiser, James Sullivan, Patrick Sullivan and his wife Amy Sullivan, and his five grandchildren: Julianna Pasquali, Josephine and Timothy Guiser, and recent additions Maeve and Rorie Sullivan. He is also survived by his sister Margaret Fink.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Timothy Sullivan, and cousin Patrick Sullivan.

A visitation will take place on Thursday, September 18 from 5-7pm with a time of remembrances to take place at 6:00pm at Dykstra Funeral Home - Downtown Chapel, 29 E 9th Street, Holland. A funeral mass will take place on Friday, September 19 at 10:00am at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 171 W 13th Street, Holland.
