Life Story / Obituary

Jacqueline Joan Nugent, also known as “The Great One” by her family, was born the daughter of Edward and Cecelia Verbrugge on December 29, 1927 on the kitchen table at the family home in Grand Rapids, MI. She disliked mornings and said it was because she had been born “late at night”. After graduating from East Grand Rapids High School (1945) she attended Stephens College in Columbia Missouri. While working as a stewardess for Capital Airline, flying her favorite DC-3, out of Washington D.C. she fell in love with her Irishman, Second Lt. Robert E. Nugent, who she would later call, Sweet Old Bob. They married on Dec. 27, 1954 in St. Stephens Catholic Church East Grand Rapids, MI. Her adventures as an active duty spouse to Colonel Robert E. Nugent United States Air Force from 1953-1983 filled her life with travel. Along the way she picked up many new talents, but quilting and knitting were her favorites. Her grandmother taught her to knit at an early age and she never stopped. Her passion for quilting continued when she joined the Parc Place Quilters. Mondays with the quilters brought her great joy. A day with her quilter friends was always good medicine and filled with laughter.

She was a Michigan girl through and through. Time spent at her cottage on the lake rejuvenated her not just because of the location and the atmosphere, but because of the caring people that surrounded her. It was not un-common for her to brag about her great neighbors and friends. They truly brought joy to her heart.

She was always up for a good laugh, a game of cards, BINGO, a donut, cup of coffee, or a root beer float.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Colonel Robert Nugent, her parents, her sisters: Patricia Verbrugge and Carol Verbrugge, and her brother, William Verbrugge.

She leaves behind dearly loved family and friends and the best grandchildren in the world, as per her last wishes, to celebrate and enjoy life to its fullest!

A Memorial Mass will be held Friday, August 31, 2018, 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 2750 Burton Street SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49546, with Monsignor Ernest P. Schneider as celebrant. Visitation from 10:00 – 10:45 a.m. prior to Mass. Internment service will be family only at Resurrection Cemetery.

Should you wish to honor Jackie, memorial donations may be made in her name to Hospice of Holland, 270 Hoover Blvd., Holland, MI 49423, or on line at Hollandhospice.org.
