Life Story / Obituary
Hilda “Hashie” Gamby, age 93, went to be with her Lord on Thursday, February 20th while surrounded by her family at Hospice of Holland.
She is survived by her children, Patrick Gamby and Kathy Clark of Holland, Scott and Mary Gamby of Holland, and Brenda Gamby of Zeeland, grandchildren Bradley, Jenni and Brayden Gamby of Hudsonville, Katie Gamby of Orlando, FL, Ryan Gamby of Holland, Jamie Gamby of Indianapolis, IN, Nicole Gamby of Holland, Thomas Steinburg of Colon, Bradley Steinburg of Tennessee, Ricki Sisson of Chesterton, IN, and Vicki Roy of Garrett, IN; as well as many great-grandchildren and beloved friends. She is preceded in death by her husband, Charles Edison Gamby, and two daughters, Charleen Sisson and Sharon Randolph.
Hashie was born the youngest child of nine siblings, in Kankakee, Illinois on September 12, 1920. She moved to Michigan at a young age and attended Holland High School until she was forced to enter the work force to help her family through the Great Depression. A life-long resident of Holland, Hashie later married Charles Gamby, her husband of 62 years, and worked at General Electric for 25 years while raising four children.
Throughout her life, Hashie was loved by many and was known for her vivacious spirit, inspiring personality, positive attitude, and kind heart. When welcoming someone in her home, Hashie would always smile and remark that she was feeling “fat and sassy” while insisting that her guest eat a complete meal before departing. A devoted Christian, Hashie was well known at Grace Episcopal Church of Holland, where she was a Sunday school teacher of many years. Her legacy of love for life and devotion to her family will continue on, providing a strong foundation and comfort for those who loved her.
In honoring her wishes there are no visitation hours or funeral planned at this time; the family will have a private, graveside service later in the spring. All donations can be made in honor of Hilda Gamby to Harbor Humane Society of Holland or the American Cancer Society.
Arrangements are by the Dykstra Funeral Home-Mulder Chapel.
