Life Story / Obituary

Print

Helen DeWitt passed away peacefully in her sleep on November 20, 2021. Helen’s strength and love of God set an example for her family and the many others’ whose lives she impacted. Her greatest joy was her family. Her actions, more than her words, provide an on-going model for her children, grandchildren, and in-laws. Family Christmases and vacations at Holden Beach, in particular, are the source of cherished memories.

Helen was born in July 1928 to the family of William & Alberta De Boer Clark. She was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Warren, and their first baby girl, 9 month old Cynthia, sister Anne Weekly Anderson and brother James W. Clark.

Helen and Warren met and dated at South High School in Grand Rapids, MI and graduated together in 1946. After graduation, she was employed by three pediatricians in Grand Rapids. In December 1950, she married Ensign Warren DeWitt and moved to Key West, FL. They were blessed with 4 great children – Mark, Gail, Craig and Scott! During the years they enjoyed many trips to National Parks - from Newfoundland to Southern California and Alaska to Key West - where Helen could be found searching for wildflowers with a guidebook in hand. Helen and Warren later made several trips to foreign countries. Helen was a long-time member of First Reformed Church in Holland, and volunteered at many children’s activities, the hospital auxiliary, Good Sense Ministry, Kids Hope USA, and Care Closet.

Helen is survived by her wonderful family. Children: Mark (Donna) DeWitt of Muskegon; Gail (Jon) Soderstrom of Madison, CT; Craig (Susan) DeWitt of Beaufort, SC; and Scott (Nancy) DeWitt of Saugatuck. Grandchildren: Rachelle (Edward Larkin) Soderstrom of San Francisco; Lance (Allison) DeWitt of Austin, TX; Kari Soderstrom of Madison, CT; Jordan DeWitt of Austin, TX; Luke (Stephanie) Soderstrom of Holland; Paige (Jered) Seymour of Caledonia, WI; Eric Canter of Los Angeles; Chris DeWitt of Kalamazoo; Grant (Suki) DeWitt of Arvada, CO; Jason (Amanda) DeWitt of Hudsonville; Corrine DeWitt of Muskegon; and, Seth DeWitt of Cleveland, OH. Great Grandchildren: Leif, Finn, Edward, Roark, Samuel, Anorah, and Maxwell.

Services will be on Tuesday, November 30 held at First Reformed Church of Holland, 630 State St. Visitation begins at 10 am, with the funeral following at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be sent in Helen’s memory to Kids Hope USA (www.kidshopeusa.org) or First Reformed Church, Holland, MI. (FRCHolland.org)
