Homer Dexter Buell Jr. was born to Homer and Thelma (Demptha Fowler) on April 24, 1928 in Notus, Idaho. He was the first of eleven children born to the couple. The famly moved often while he was growing up; a pattern that he continued in his adult life. In 1964 he and his family moved to Michigan where he taught in the Seventh-day Adventist school system. Teaching in 7 schools over his 29 years of teaching.

Before becoming a teacher, he held a variety of jobs, starting work in the pea harvest in order to help support his parents and their growing family. Other occupations included logger, baker, soldier, and fishing commercially in Alaska for salmon for 29 years.

The most inspiring part of his life was his love for and his commitment to God. This is what made him who he was. This was evidenced by various offices he held in the church. Perhaps working with young people brought him the most joy. He spent over 30 years working with the church youth organization known as the Pathfinders. After he retired, he started going on mission trips to Latin America. When he turned 70 yrs. old he went to Costa Rica for two years to teach English.

His hobbies included birding, woodworking, leathercraft, gardening, and camping, he especially enjoyed canoe camping in the Boundary Waters of Northern Minnesota.

He lived in many places during his lifetime, but his two favorite places were Costa Rica and Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

On April 2, 2022 he fell asleep in Jesus and is awaiting the soon return of His Savior. He is survived by his wife Cathy, children: Harold (Anita), Lloyd (Londa), David (Day), Brent (Sue), Jeannie (Trent) Logan, and Kate. He leaves behind 14 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren, and three brothers.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Sandi Shimel, grandson H. Dale Buell, his parents and 7 siblings.

A memorial service is planned for 3:00 pm, Friday, May 13, 2022 at the Holland Seventh-day Adventist Church, 11279 E. Ottogan St., Holland, MI 49423.

Burial will be in Fort Custer National Cemetery.
