Gloria Scott Williams 11-9-1930 - 8-23-2023

Gloria Cecilia Lerline Scott was born in Columbus, Ohio. She attended The Columbus School for Girls, Pine Manor College in Massachusetts and later received her bachelor’s degree and teaching certificate in Physical Education from Ohio State University.

As a young girl, Gloria could often be found on the Ohio State tennis courts looking for a game with the local college students. She was full of energy, passionate and outgoing. Her bright red hair and freckles were truly kissed by fire.

Across a crowded college campus, her bright red hair was noticed by Charles (Chuck) Williams. A chance encounter which sealed her fate and happiness for the next 71 years. They were married on August 18, 1951 in Columbus, Ohio.

Settling in Columbus, life was soon very busy, hectic and full of activities. Their union produced 5 sons and eventually and finally, a daughter.

On a weekend getaway visiting cousins in Macatawa Park, they spotted an old cottage needing a lot of work. It was a bit spontaneous but they soon purchased “Tree Top Lodge” which would become the family project and home for many years.

Life in Michigan was full of adventures. Sailing at Macatawa Bay Yacht Club, skiing at Carousel Mountain and of course tennis.

Gloria loved teaching and her students. Her outgoing personality, innovative and progressive ideas took physical education to a new level. She was an instrumental part and foundation of the Holland Public School system and founded the girls tennis team and gymnastics team. She was loved by her students and had a positive impact on many.

There were many houses built, remodeled and sold over the years, which eventually led to the move to Saugatuck. Gloria loved her wooded lot in Saugatuck. It was her sanctuary and happy place. She kept the animals and birds very well fed.

Gloria and Chuck spent 31 winters at Outdoor Resorts of America in Melbourne Beach Florida where they made many long lasting friendships playing tennis and Pickleball. She loved riding her bicycle, waving and smiling at everyone.

Gloria is survived by her children, Scott, Skip (Gretchen), Tim (Lesa), Eddie (Angela) and Wendy (Jeff Reinink). 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, her brother David and stepbrother Frank.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles W Williams, son Walter Stark Williams and granddaughter Halie Kay Williams.
