Life Story / Obituary
Gilberto Gonzalez Jr., beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, passed away peacefully on December 20, 2024, at the age of 69 in Holland, Michigan. Born on August 26, 1955, in Laredo, Texas, Gilberto’s journey through life was marked by love, faith, creativity, and a deep commitment to his family.
Gilberto was the cherished husband of Ramona Gonzalez, with whom he celebrated 50 years of marriage in 2024. Their love story began at the age of 17. They were childhood friends who eventually fell in love—a relationship that blossomed into a marriage that spanned half a century. Together, they raised four children and shared countless memories. They demonstrated the power of love through the years. Their love for one another was a testament to the enduring bond they shared and it continued to thrive as they became parents, grandparents and great-grandparents.
Gilberto is survived by his loving wife, Ramona and their children: Gizeh Gonzalez and Antonio Cuevas, Abi Guerra and Victor Guerra, Gamaliel Gonzalez and Jennifer Gonzalez, Eunice Chico and Neftaly Chico. He was also a proud grandfather to Gabriel DeLaRosa, David DeLaRosa, Franki Chico, Noelani Chico, Rylee Boersen, Aida Chico, Arella Chico, Giana Cuevas, Gamaliel Gonzalez Jr., Sylis Gonzalez, O’rion Gonzalez, Antonio Cuevas Jr., and Amalia Cuevas. He was especially blessed to be a great-grandfather to Izabella DeLaRosa and Gabriel DeLaRosa Jr., also survived by beloved fur babies—Pecas, Kye, Natie, Annie, Sparky, Moso, Rocket, Tank, Ambrosia, Peanut, Mavis, and Muffin —who brought joy to his life.
Gilberto was preceded in death by his father, Gilberto Gonzalez Regalado, his mother, San Juana Espinoza and his brother, Luis Cantu. He is also survived by his sister, Griselda DeLaFuente and Diego DeLaFuente, as well as, extended family members, Velia Lopez, Maria Olague, Javier Olague, and Gerardo Dillehay, who were considered a part of his family.
Born in Laredo, Texas, and raised in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, Gilberto made lifelong friendships in his childhood neighborhood. He fondly recalled the days when he and his friends would gather for playful “orange fights” and create memories that would stay with him forever. His love for storytelling, especially about his school days in Nuevo Laredo, was something he cherished sharing with those around him.
Gilberto's career was a reflection of his dedication and skill. After settling in Holland, Michigan, on Labor Day weekend in 1982, he worked diligently, retiring in 2019 from Haworth. Outside of work, he was a passionate and creative individual with many talents. He loved baseball, enjoyed making birdhouses, and had a natural talent for drawing and wood carving. He was also an expert at playing the guitar by ear and enjoyed listening to music while relaxing in his backyard. A true nature enthusiast, Gilberto spent countless hours outdoors, appreciating the beauty around him.
His legacy was not only in his work and creative endeavors but also in his unwavering generosity, kindness, and compassion. Gilberto was known for his soft-spoken nature, his ability to listen, and his willingness to help anyone in need. His family and friends remember him as a loving and generous soul, whose gentle spirit left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
Gilberto's family takes comfort in knowing that his love and lessons will continue to guide them, and they will forever carry him in their hearts. His memory will live on through the stories, traditions, and values he instilled in all who had the privilege of knowing him.
