Gertrude Sybesma, age 101, of Holland, wife of the late Simon Sybesma passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 8, 2021, at Zeeland Hospital. Born on November 12, 1920, in Holland, Gertrude was the daughter of Minnie (Brouwer) and Gerrit Nevenzel. She graduated from Holland High School in 1939 and attended Western Michigan University studying Home Economics. In July 1943, she married her high school sweetheart, Simon Sybesma, who preceded her in death in 2014. They were married 70 years. Gertrude was a gifted seamstress, enjoyed crafting and making cross-stitch projects for family and friends. Gertrude was a member of Christ Memorial Church for many years. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Neely and Marge Alberts and two brothers, Bob & Harvard Nevenzel. Surviving Gertrude are daughter Carol (Tom) Morton of Alexandria, VA; two sons, Bill (Lorelle) Sybesma of Grand Haven and Brian (Diane) Sybesma of Holland; grandchildren are Tom Morton, Jr., Jonathan Morton, Courtney (Derek) Stults, Michelle (Richard) Carpenter, Andrea Sybesma, Samantha Sparks and Melanie Sparks; seven great-grandsons. Also surviving Gertrude are sisters-in-law Adeline Sybesma and Elaine Sybesma of Holland. Funeral services are 3 pm Sunday (December 19) at the Dykstra Funeral Home-Mulder Chapel, 188 West 32nd Street, with the Rev. Gary Spykerman (of Parkside Bible Church) officiating. Burial will be in Graafschap Cemetery. Visitation will be 2-3 pm, prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Camp Geneva.
