Life Story / Obituary

Print

Frederic T. Nugent (Ted) passed away peacefully on July 23, 2017 in the loving care of Vista Springs Holland Meadows and Hospice of Holland. Ted was born June 15, 1929 in Freeport, Illinois to Raymond H. Nugent and Elsa G. Wagner Nugent, who, along with his brother, Thomas Nugent, and parents-in-law, Dick and Mamie Van Wingeren, preceded him in death.

Ted is survived by his wife of 46 years, Donna K. Nugent of Holland, MI, daughters Margaret (Brock) Ellwood of Tucson, AZ and Leslie (Charles) Duquet of Bloomfield Hills, MI, son Thomas Nugent of Austin, TX, stepsons Jeffrey Sale and Kurt (Amy) Sale of Holland, grandchildren Sarah and Carter Ellwood, step grandchildren Tyler and Travis Sale, and sisters-and brothers-in-law, Shirley and Bob Berens and Arlene and Gar Egedy.

Ted received his B.A. from Amherst College, Amherst, MA in 1951 and his Master of Architecture degree from Columbia University New York, NY in 1955. His love of fine art became his passion while attending Ecoles D'Art Americanes at Palais de Fontainebleau in Fontainebleau, France during the Summer of 1953. He applied that passion to all he did, which was especially evident in his design of many beautiful residences (including his own) and commercial buildings in West Michigan, as well as in his highly detailed restoration of several vintage automobiles. Ted also adored his dogs and sailing out of Macatawa.

A celebration of his life will be held from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. on Friday, July 28, 2017 at Macatawa Bay Yacht Club. A memorial service will also be held at All Saints Episcopal Church in Saugatuck, Michigan on Sunday, July 30 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ted's memory may be sent to the Endowment Fund of All Saints Episcopal Church, 252 Grand Street, Saugatuck, MI or Hospice of Holland.
