Frederic D. Byrne, age 49, of Big Rapids, passed away on February 13, 2013 in the Mark Twain National Forest in Van Buren, Missouri.

Fred graduated from Holland High School in 1982 and entered the US Marine Corps to begin his life of service to others. After returning home and graduating from GVSU Fred served as a police officer for the City of Dowagiac and later after graduating from Thomas M. Cooley Law School he served as the Assistant to the City Attorney for Big Rapids. Fred later hung his own shingle, Big Rapids Area Legal Services, in order to serve those people in Mecosta and neighboring Counties who couldn't typically afford an attorney's services. Fred loved nothing more than watching his son play sports in Holland, Big Rapids, and then at Hope College. Fred's big laugh and smile live on through his son and in the hearts of everyone who met him.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert G. Byrne and his brother, Mark Byrne.

Fred is survived by his wife of 20 years, Diana (Hamilton) Byrne of Big Rapids; his son, Robert Anthony “Tony” Byrne of Big Rapids and Holland; his mother, Dolores Byrne of Holland; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Dennis and Marie Hamilton of Holland; his brothers and sisters, Robert and Pat Byrne of Holland; John and Carol Byrne of Fennville, Bonnie Strauss of South Haven, Patrick Byrne of Grand Rapids, Michael Byrne of Holland, Kateri Coffin of Holland; his sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Terri and David Smith of Holland, Denise Hamilton and Lori Morency of Brockton, MA; and a large adoring family and amazing friends.

A memorial visitation will be held from 4-7pm on Saturday, June 29, 2013 at the Northwood Chapel, Dykstra Funeral Homes, 295 Douglas Avenue.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions may be given to WISE – Women’s Information Service, Inc., PO Box 1249, Big Rapids, MI 49307.
