Life Story / Obituary

On September 7, 2022, Ervin (Erv) DeWeerd, loving father, brother, grandfather and friend to so many passed away at the age of 77.

Erv was born on March 2, 1945 in Holland, MI to Evert and Joan (Knoll) DeWeerd. He was a graduate of Holland Public Schools and went on to Grand Rapids Community College as well as Grand Valley State University where he was studying to become a biologist until he was drafted into the Army. Erv proudly served his country in the U.S Army during the Vietnam war and returned home to Holland in 1968. On June 7, 1968 he married Peggy Ann (Scheerhorn) DeWeerd. They were married for 43 years, and would go on to raise two children, Joseph and Jennifer. Erv worked many years for Granger Construction in Lansing, MI, traveling the state as a union carpenter and held the title of superintendent at the time of his retirement. Anyone that knew Erv knew he had an immense love for wildlife and the outdoors. He was a member of the Michigan Trappers Association and after retirement, continued to work for the DNR. He loved duck hunting, bird watching and fishing and would take a trip out to his property in North Dakota any chance he could get. Erv was known for his “no non-sense” approach to life, selling and buying animal hides, his extensive knowledge of wildlife and his stories, boy did he have a lot of stories.

Erv was preceded in death by his father Evert, mother Joan, wife Peggy, sister Dee and brother-in-law Dave. He is survived by his son Joe DeWeerd of Holland, daughter Jennifer (Daigle) of Grand Haven, sister Mary and Jim Nienhuis of Wayland, grandchildren Samantha, Sydney, Drake and Andrew, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be 11 am Tuesday (September 13) at the Dykstra Funeral Home-Mulder Chapel, 188 West 32nd Street. Burial, with Military Honors, will be in Graafschap Cemetery. Visitation is 6-8 pm Monday (September 12) also at the chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Holland VFW Post #2144.
