Ernest Sanders, Sr.

Ernest Alex Sanders, Sr., age 91, of Holland, died Wednesday, September 1, 2010, at his home.

Mr. Sanders was born in Chicago March 10, 1919 to Anton and Alma Sanders. He grew up during the depression and went to work at age 16 at CCC Camps during the day and for the Army at night. Ernie worked most of his life in the newspaper business retiring in 1990. The last 35 years of which he spent with the Chicago Sun Times. Following his retirement, he enjoyed walks visiting neighbors, country western music, and watching game shows and western movies. He was a devoted husband to his wife Mary, who died in 1999.

Preceding him in death was his wife, Mary Ann Sanders (1999); son, Donald Joseph Sanders (2003), son-in-law, Leonard Shepherd (2009); and a granddaughter, Nicole Bernick (2001).

Surviving are his children, JoAnne (Bob) Jacobs, of Holland, Ernest A. (Maria) Sanders, of Skokie, IL, Karen (Nick) Christodoulou, of Skokie, and Heidi Shepherd, of Holland; 12 grandchildren;

16 great grandchildren; and Nieces, Helen Hansen and Mary Francis Bartalone.

Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, 11:00am, at the Mulder Chapel, Dykstra Life Story Funeral Home, 188 W. 32nd St. Burial will be in Pilgrim Home Cemetery.

Visitation is scheduled for Friday, 7-9pm, at the funeral home.
