Dr. Ernest O. Moore Jr., age 89, of Holland died Sunday, September 29, 2013.

Ernest was born July 21, 1924 in Southern IL. He served 3 ½ years in Naval Aviation during WWII. Ernest married Mary Wille in 1949 and both graduated from the University of Illinois. Ernest graduated in 1951 with a degree in Architectural Engineering. Later he became the partner in the firm of Healy, Moore and Assoc. in Joliet, IL. After 25 years in that firm he resigned to enroll in the doctoral program in Architecture at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. In 1980 he received his Doctorate in Architecture degree and continued to teach and do research at the University of Michigan. He then took the position of chairman of the Architectural Department at the University of Nebraska. In 1989 Ernest retired from his position in Nebraska and he and Mary moved to Holland, MI.

During his lifetime Ernie, as he was known, enjoyed flying both airplanes and gliders along with sail boat racing. He also served in the Holland Flotilla of the Coast Guard Auxiliary for 10 years.

Ernest had many interests which included water color painting, Sunday school teacher at Peace Lutheran church, member of Hope Academy of Senior Professionals (H.A.S.P.) and occasional guest lecturer in certain Hope College classes. Ernie was a long time Mentor to young people during his life. Usually his mentees were youngsters at risk living in one parent families.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years Mary and children: Susan Moore of Florence, KY, Brian and Patricia Moore of Candler, N.C., Michael and Patricia Moore of Hauppauge, NY and Jane and Tim Alderson of Asheville, NC; grandchildren: Thomas Moore and Elizabeth Moore

A funeral service will be 11:00 AM, Thursday, October 3, 2013 at Peace Lutheran Church 398 James Street in Holland. The Reverend Justin J. Walker will be officiating. Burial will be in Pilgrim Home Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6-8 PM, Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at Northwood Chapel – Dykstra Funeral Homes 295 Douglas Avenue in Holland and from 10:00-10:45 AM prior to the service at the church.
