Elwood (Al) Jay Rycenga, age 85, passed away peacefully at Holland Hospital on November 3, 2022. He was born March 28, 1937 in Grand Haven, Michigan to Herman and Doris Rycenga. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Herm Rycenga, Roger Rycenga and a sister, Lois Higbee. Elwood is now reunited with his wife of sixty years, Marge Rycenga, who preceded him in death in 2021. He is survived by his sons Scott (Linda), and Kent (Cherry), grandchildren, Chad Shosten, Tyler (Jessica) Rycenga, Sarah Rycenga, Katelyn Rycenga, Kelsey (Sean) Graff and Kamryn Rycenga and two great grandchildren. Elwood is also survived by his in laws, Edith Rycenga, Ron Higbee, Lorena (Peach) Laman, Jill Yonker and Judy Arbogast, and many nieces and nephews. Elwood worked for General Electric for 35 years until the plant closed in Holland, Michigan. He finished his career working as a custodian for West Ottawa Public Schools. He also worked part time at Port Sheldon Party Store and Family Fare. He enjoyed fishing and had a green thumb - he loved working on the lawn and planting and caring for his vegetable garden and flowers. Elwood was especially grateful for the loving care he received during the past year from (Jessie) Jessica. He was a member of Trinity Reformed Church and former member of Bethel Reformed Church. A private memorial service and no visitation is planned at this time. The family is being served by Dykstra Funeral Home - Mulder Chapel, 188 West 32nd Street. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Holland or Trinity Reformed Church Mission Fund.
