Doris Ten Brink had seen incredible changes during her lifetime, facing challenges with her nation that included two world wars, the Great Depression, and the Civil Rights movement, as well as her own personal hardships. Born on April 9, 1910, her parents, Henry and Anna (Steinfort) Arens taught her to work hard and appreciate what she had. Doris grew up in Holland, Michigan, where she attended school through the sixth grade.

Doris began working at an early age and found employment as a seamstress at Friedlen and Baker Furniture. She was skilled with her hands and as she grew older she took pleasure in making things for her loved ones. She enjoyed crocheting and sewing, and liked making creative crafts.

Doris eventually raised six children whom she loved dearly. Her greatest pride was in being a mother and she encouraged her children in their endeavors. Despite her busy schedule with the kids and work, she tried to make time for gardening and enjoyed sharing the fruits of her labors. She especially loved flowers.

Doris cared about those around her and looked for ways to be an encouragement at Harvestime Fellowship Church. She served the community as a member of the Women's VFW Auxiliary #2144. She understood the importance of community involvement and was grateful for the friends she made.

Doris found a job with Robert Shaw Controls and retired in 1975. After her retirement, she was thrilled to be able to spend more time with her grandchildren and even great grandchildren. She was always up for a game of BINGO and spent countless hours of enjoyment playing with family and friends, a cup of Lipton Tea or a cup of coffee never far from her reach.

Doris had a soft spot for all kinds of animals, but there was nothing that compared to her love for her family. She endured the loss of two sons, and learned the importance of making the most of the time she was given. She treasured every hug from a grandchild, every visit from her great grandchildren, and every opportunity to meet a new great great grandchild. She leaves her family with memories of her many kindnesses and the assurance of her love.

Doris died Sunday, July 23, 2006, at Haven Park Christian Nursing Home. She was preceded in death by two sons, Gordon in 1933 and Willard in 1994. Surviving are her children: Jacqueline Ten Brink of Holland, James and Kathy Ten Brink of Idlewild, Eugene and Donna Ten Brink, and Norm and Arlene Ten Brink of Holland; daughter-in-law-Ruth Ten Brink of Colorado Springs, CO; fourteen grandchildren and several great and great great grandchildren; sister, Julia and John Woldering of Holland; brothers Henry Arens and Clarence and Betty Arens of Sterling Heights; and several nephews, nieces, and cousins.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, July 25, from 7 - 9 p.m. at Dykstra Life Story Funeral Homes - Downtown Chapel, 29 East 9th Street. Services will be held at the Chapel on Wednesday, July 26, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Arlee Horn officiating. Burial will be in the Pilgrim Home Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Lung Association. Please visit Doris' personal memory page where you may share a favorite memory or sign the online guest book.
