Life Story / Obituary
Donald “Skip” R. Stratton, age 72, passed away on November 5th, 2025, after a very strong and brave fight with cancer.
Skip was an avid sports fan, especially of all Michigan teams—U of M, the Detroit Tigers, and the Lions. He spent his younger years playing sports and continued to enjoy many leagues throughout his life. He proudly served as an MP in the U.S. Army and later retired from Spartan Stores in 2003.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 52 years (almost 53), Pat and his two children, Nick (Trish) Stratton and Brandie (Kallen) Shooltz; and seven grandchildren: Cameron (Emilee) Shooltz, Aubrey (Jordan) Swindle, Carson (Kristen) Shooltz, Caden Shooltz, Brooke Stratton, Dominic Stratton, and Liam Stratton. He also leaves behind three great-grandchildren, Elliott Swindle, Greyson Shooltz and Rowen Shooltz. Skip is also survived by his sister Nedra Ball and his brother Steve (Linda) Stratton, along with many nieces and nephews.
Skip loved being outdoors and took immense pride in his beautiful yard. It was full of unique foliage, flowers, and trees…many of which he planted himself. He spent countless hours there, tending to every detail and finding peace in the space he loved. Skip and Pat treasured many summers at their lake house with their kids and grandkids, creating memories that will last a lifetime. He loved nothing more than watching his grandkids play sports and would never miss a game. He will be remembered for the parts of himself he shared and the memories that remain with those who knew him. A celebration of Skip’s life will be held in the spring of 2026 at a place near water…his favorite!
