Donald D. VanCompernolle, originally from Kansas City, Missouri, died unexpectedly due to accidental injuries on Sunday, November 23, 2025, at Trinity Mercy Health Hospital in Muskegon, Michigan, surrounded by family.
Don enjoyed a successful career as an Automotive and Textile Executive. After 16 years in Nashville, Tennessee as President of Leggett and Platt Textile Fiber Division, Don and Mary retired back to Holland, Michigan to be closer to their children and grandchildren.
Don lived a very active life pursuing his favorite pastimes: golf, swimming, fishing, repairing anything his family needed fixed, and rooting for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Kansas City Chiefs (win or lose). Most importantly, Don treasured every moment spent with his eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, proudly telling anyone who would listen that they were all “stars.”
Don is survived by his wife, Mary; his children, Jeff and Leah VanCompernolle, Chris VanCompernolle, Amy and Bryan DePree and Lori and Robert Vance; and his grandchildren, Zachary (Olivia)VanCompernolle, Kyle VanCompernolle, Wesley (Elizabeth) VanCompernolle, Michelle (Rhys) VanCompernolle, Nathan DePree, Emily (Marshall) Warners, Maxwell Vance, and Nicholas (Roza) Vance. He is also survived by special family in Kansas City, Missouri, including Mike and Mary Louise Lewis, Pat and Carol Lewis and several nieces and nephews - Tim, Mikki (Tom), Jay (Riley), Crystal, Matthew, Megan and Austin - as well as Matt and Jerilyn Lewis and nieces Sara, LB, Katie and Paige of Houston, Texas and along with many close friends across the entire country.
Don’s family would like to thank Trinity Mercy Health Hospital for the extraordinary and compassionate care he received, while being treated with such dignity and kindness.
A family celebration of life and Irish wake will be planned at a later date.
May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind always be at your back.
May the sunshine warm upon your face,
and rains fall soft upon your fields.
