Life Story / Obituary
Charles Joseph Bialas Jr.
11.29.1944 – 7.28.2025
Charles was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on November 29, 1944. Early in his life he grew to love music, literature, and theater. At some point he started volunteering at the Civic Theater in Grand Rapids. His creative talent for designing sets started there and never left him. When he moved to the Saugatuck area, he continued refining his craft at local theaters in Grand Rapids, Grand Haven, Allegan, and Holland. Eventually he took over the design and execution of many memorable productions, particularly at the Holland Civic Theater. One change of sets became in itself an entrance; the curtains remained open for the audience to watch as the entire set magically spun around before their eyes, ending with a standing ovation. That says a lot about this talented man.
Charles retired from Steelcase Corporation after many years and later worked at The Shaker Messenger in Holland.
Anyone who knew him would probably agree that his persona was that of precision. That tendency worked its way into his quiet time in the love of fabrics and quilting. To examine the exactness of his designs and stitches clearly tells that story.
Charles had two children, Todd and Melissa, and an adopted daughter, Jillian, who resides in Tucson, Arizona.
Both naturally born children are now deceased but were often mentioned when he reminisced about his life. He is survived by a brother, Phil, and two grandchildren, Sophia and Camden. Those who knew this kind and loving soul will greatly miss him. Charles passed in Muskegon, Michigan, on July 24, 2025.
Memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Holland Civic Theater or Christian Neighbors in Douglas, Michigan.
