Life Story / Obituary

On August 27, 2016 Benjamin Scott Poll rolled up his mat and ran, leaping and jumping through the gates of Heaven. Scott was born in Holland on May 18, 1981, hours after a drunk driver collided with his parent’s car. He has been multiply disabled since birth.

Scott was a baptized member of First Reformed Church of Holland. He graduated in 2007 from the Ottawa Area Center. In 2009 Scott moved to Harbor House Ministries in Jenison where staff provided him with daily fun, adventure and loving care. Thanks to the efforts of My Team Triumph, Scott participated in the Riverbank Run, Grand Rapids Triathlon and Grand Rapids Marathon. Scott was a willing participant in any fun provided for him and especially liked bumps in the road. Although Scott never spoke, his smile provided all the communication he needed.

Scott is survived by his parents, Bob and Ivy Beth Poll of Spring Lake formerly of Holland; sisters, Marcianne (Steve) Thielman of Whitehall and Erin (Scott) Tanis of Holland, nieces; Laura and Anne Thielman of Whitehall; paternal grandparents, Howard and Jeanne Poll of Holland, many aunts, uncles and cousins who prayed him through this life, as well as lifelong friend and prom date, Lindsay Bonzelaar.

Scott was greeted at Heaven’s gate by his maternal grandparent, Henry and Ivy Ruth Pathuis and uncle, David R. Jonker.

Scott was blessed with wonderful, loving caregivers throughout his life, Fran Kortman, Phil and Carol Hollar of Grand Haven and Tom and Connie Beukema family of Zeeland.

A memorial service will be held Thursday 1pm at First Reformed Church, 630 State St., Holland with Rev. Darrell Koopmans officiating. A reception will follow.
