Life Story / Obituary

Surrounded by his loved ones and friends, Dr. Roger Erbaugh passed away on Thursday, May 11, 2023, at his home in Holland, Michigan. He was 72 years old.

Roger was born on July 7, 1950, to Dr. Richard Erbaugh and Virginia Noll-Erbaugh in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He spent his childhood in East Grand Rapids and then attended Alma College, followed by the University of Michigan Dental School, graduating in 1976. After Dental School, he returned to East Grand Rapids to join his father in practice and raise his children. Roger was in practice for 37 years caring for his community in more ways than one. He also practiced Forensic Dentistry and partnered with the police department in Kent County to help solve crimes.

A man at home in the world, the great pleasure of his life was traveling the world with his family and friends while creating unforgettable memories together. Roger made lifelong friends wherever he went. He found a passion and community while spending many happy hours woodworking and sculpting in the Wood Shop at Evergreen Commons. A lifelong learner, talented gardener, voracious reader, and pretty average golfer – Roger will be missed by all.

Roger is survived by his wife, Laurie Slighter, and his two children, Joe Erbaugh (Heather Chamberlain) and Chrissie Jacobs (Aaron Jacobs). A loving grandfather, he leaves behind five grandchildren: Jessica Erbaugh, Lauren Jacobs, Cole Jacobs, Aly Conrad, Brady Chamberlain, and one great-grandchild: Declan Conrad. He was also a loyal brother to Barbara Mulnix, Dr. Thom and Jackie Erbaugh, John and Linda Slighter, Don and Missy Slighter, and Mary Jane Bonzelaar.

We can all honor his memory by following his advice to, “learn something new and do a kind deed every day.” The family will host a visitation at the Dykstra Funeral Home – Northwood Chapel (295 Douglas Avenue) - on Sunday, May 14, from 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m.

Memorial Contributions may be made to Spectrum Health Hospice or Evergreen Commons.
