Life Story / Obituary

Lucia “Lucy” Silva was a caring mother, grandmother, aunt, godmother, comadre, cousin, sister, and friend.

She was born to Jose and Maria Silva on April 2, 1956. One of many in a bustling household, she grew up in a family full of love and respect. After graduating from high school, she began working as an ESL teacher’s aide. Her work as an aide introduced her to her first love, Jorge. It wasn’t long before they married and had a daughter they named Guadalupe.

While Lucy only had one daughter, she shared love and nurture with so many people in her life. She was very witty and had a sarcastic sense of humor. Even when she was picking on you, you knew the depth of her love, as she was still kind and truthful. She never asked for much but went above and beyond for those she cared for.

Lucy’s life changed many times, but she always picked up and kept moving. She was so blessed throughout her life. Several years after the passing of Jorge, she was lucky to find love again. Lucy spent many years in the second half of her life with a gentle and caring man named Mayo.

She was hardworking from the moment she joined the workforce. She wore lots of different hats during her lifetime, but she finally found her place. She spent years working for different manufacturers in Holland until her early retirement in 2020.

After retiring, she was able to spend much more time with those she loved most. She reveled in getting together or going out with her family and friends in town. She especially appreciated the opportunity to catch a movie or go out to eat with Mia, Jose, and their children, Jose-Luis, Esperanza, Alma, and Lena; or her friends from high school.

Lucy had a passion for cooking and a love for the outdoors. She loved walks or just sitting outside when the weather was nice. As an animal lover, she cared for many fur babies in her lifetime. Some would even joke that she liked her animals more than people at times.

At the age of 67, Lucy went to be with her Heavenly Father.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jose and Maria Silva; brother, Andres Garza (Coco); fiancé, Mayo Silva; and sister, Violanda (Keata) Evans.

Lucy is survived by many who loved her dearly and cherished their time with her. They will continue to carry her memory for generations.

A small service celebrating her life is scheduled for 11 a.m. on March 23, 2024, at Holy Fire Fellowship on the corner of W. 19th Street and Pine Ave. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Lucy’s honor to the Harbor Humane Society.

Arrangements are by the Dykstra Funeral Home-Mulder Chapel.
