Life Story / Obituary

Leon Vaselopulos went home to be with Jesus on May 28, 2016. He was born in 1927 in the Bronx, N.Y. to Greek immigrants, Anastasios and Mary Vaselopulos. Together with his beloved sisters, Helen and Cleo, Leon helped his family survive during the hardships of the Depression years.

Leon built his life on Jesus Christ, his cornerstone; he read and treasured God’s word and often spoke of God’s faithfulness. In 1950, he graduated from Cooper Union College in N.Y.C. Leon received his architect license and worked with several firms including Kahn & Jacobs, Perera & Luckman, Skidmore, Owings & Merill and Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corp. Moving to Schenectady, New York in 1967, He worked with the N.Y. Education Department and the N.Y. State University Construction Fund.

In 1955, Leon married Peggy Stathatos who preceded him in death in 2011. They treasured their 56 years together. Leon prayed for his family and loved to call and encourage his children and grandchildren. Leon modeled the kindness, faithfulness, and provision of his loving Heavenly Father to his family and to all who met him. He lived his life with intentionality, thankfulness, and joy.

Leon was a gifted artist, an avid reader, and a skillful cook. His hobbies included trains, traveling, and riding his bike. He enjoyed playing with the “Note Blenders” harmonica band. Leon had a heart for those in need and helped with the food distribution at Harlem Church. He was a faithful member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church and loved to sing in the choir and around the house.

Leon is survived by his children: Maria & John Nyitray; Tom & Kathleen Vaselopulos; and Peter & Virginie Vaselopulos; his grandchildren: David & Elizabeth Nyitray and Laura Nyitray; Kristofor & Jessica Vaselopulos and Nikolas Vaselopulos; Paul Vaselopulos and Julie Vaselopulos; 2 great-grandchildren and his nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be at Dykstra Funeral Home - Northwood Chapel, 295 Douglas Avenue in Holland, MI on Thursday, June 2, 2016 from 6-8 p.m. with an Orthodox Trisagion Prayer Service at 8:00 p.m. A funeral liturgy will be celebrated by Rev. Fr. James Honeycutt at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 185 E. Pontaluna Road in Norton Shores, MI at 11:00 a.m., Friday, June 3, 2016.
