Howard W. Bakker, age 92, of West Olive passed away Friday, August 1, 2025, at his home.

Howard was born on March 18, 1933, to Albert and Louis (Heerspink) Bakker. Growing up in a close-knit family with Christ at the center shaped Howard’s dreams for his own family. He graduated from Holland Public School in 1951. Howard was drafted into the army where he proudly served for 2 years during the Korean conflict.

Shortly after returning from the military (1955), Howard married the love of his life, Betty (Bloemers) and they began to build their future with faith and family as their highest priorities. They raised their family of 5 children in a home Howard built in West Olive Michigan. Howard attended Harlem Reformed Church from the time he was small and continued to call Harlem his home church as his family grew. He set an example for his children by filling many roles in the church: Sunday school teacher, Deacon, and Elder. Throughout his life, he functioned as the hands and feet of Jesus for many that needed help and care.

Howard worked for many years as a machinist at Challenge Machinery in Grand Haven and then transitioned to working as a mail carrier for the West Olive Post Office. After their children were grown, Howard and Betty purchased a wooded piece of property and built a home designed by Howard where they have resided to this day. Upon retirement, he and Betty traveled the US extensively in an RV and also explored the world: China, Australia, Africa, South America, and Korea to name a few.

Howard took great delight in his family and attended many activities in which his grandkids and great grandkids were involved. He supported each of them in their education as well as cheered them on during their sporting events. He made an effort to show his love and care for each of them. In addition to his love for his Savior and family, Howard also enjoyed biking, camping, and wood carving.

Howard is survived by his wife of 70 years, Betty Bakker, their children, Valerie (Rick) Prince, David (Lynda) Bakker, Denise (Ernest) Overkamp, and Cathy (Jack) VanSlooten, 11 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Eunice Bakker, and is brother and sister -in-law, Roger and Marie Bloemers.

He is preceded in death by his daughter, Linda Bakker (1986), his parents and siblings.

Howard is dearly loved by his family and will be greatly missed but we rejoice that he is at peace in the arms of his Savior.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm, Tuesday, August 5, 2025 at Harlem Reformed Church, 6854 144th Avenue, Holland, MI 49424. Pastor John Nyitray will be officiating. Burial will be in Port Sheldon Township Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be given to Hospice of Holland.

Arrangements are by Dykstra Funeral Homes - Northwood Chapel.
