Life Story / Obituary


Herbert F. Olney, age 86, of Zeeland died Tuesday, April 26, 2016 at Zeeland Community Hospital.

Herb was a member of Grace Episcopal Church. He was a veteran of the US Army serving during the Korean Conflict. Herb retired from the Michigan State Police as a Detective 1st Lieutenant after 27 years of service. He was member of the American Legion, Masonic Unity Lodge 191, and the Saladin Shrine Center. He was preceded in death by his wife Mabel Olney and a brother-in-law Jerry Gray.

He is survived by his children: William and Kathryn Olney of Zeeland, Jane Olney of Zeeland, Jon and Kathy Olney of Kingsley, MI and Kevin and Dawn Olney of Belmont, MI; grandchildren: Shannon, Matthew, Jennifer and Michael Olney; sister: Cecelia Gray of Albany, OR; sister-in-law: Donna Hoedeman of Battle Creek, MI; nieces, nephews and cousins; special friends: Ellie Kleinheksel and family.

A memorial service will be 11:00 am, Saturday, May 21, 2016 at Grace Episcopal Church, 555 Michigan Avenue in Holland. Reverend Jodi Baron will be officiating. Inurnment will be in Resurrection Garden at Grace Episcopal Church.

Visitation will be from 6-8 pm, Friday, May 20, 2016 at Dykstra Funeral Home - Northwood Chapel, 295 Douglas Avenue in Holland. Memorial contributions may be given to Hospice of Holland or City On A Hill Health Clinic in Zeeland. To sign an on-line registry or leave a memory please visit
