Gerald "Gerry" Bekken, age 97, of Douglas, passed away on October 25, 2021.

Gerry was born in Douglas, Michigan to Herman and Jennie (Lugten) Bekken on October 8, 1924. He attended Saugatuck Schools and Graduated from Saugatuck High School with the Class of 1942. After graduation Mr. Bekken enlisted in the United States Army. He faithfully and honorably served his country during World War II in the Pacific Theater. For his meritorious service at sea he was awarded a Bronze Star. On March 1, 1953, Mr. Bekken started working for the United States Postal Service as a clerk in Douglas, Michigan. After 30 years of service to his community he was selected on merit out of five finalist, and appointed Post Master of the Douglas post office. He was Post Master for nine years and retired after 39 years of postal service. Gerry had a heart for public service and served as a volunteer fire fighter for the Saugatuck Township Fire Department for 27 years. He also served on the fire department board for another 42 years for a total of 69 consecutive years of service to the Village of Douglas, Township of Saugatuck and the City of Saugatuck. Gerry was the secretary of the Douglas School Board, a member of the Moose Lodge and he was actively involved in the March of Dimes. In full retirement he restored antique furniture, enjoyed golfing and staying active on the farm.

Mr. Bekken was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanette Bekken in 2014; daughter, Colleen L. DeVore in 2019 and two brothers and a sister.

Gerry is survived by several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive visitors on Monday November 1, from 10:00am to 11:00am, at the Dykstra Funeral Home - Saugatuck Chapel, 520 Lake Street, Saugatuck. A funeral service will be held at 11:00am at the Saugatuck Chapel. Father Cori Stoppell will preside over the ceremony. The V.F.W. Post 2144 and the United States Army Honor Guard will bestow military honors. Interment will be in Douglas Cemetery.
