Life Story / Obituary
George Boerigter of Holland, Michigan passed away peacefully in the early morning hours on Monday February 23, 2026 after being surrounded by family for the weekend. He was the youngest of four sons of Edward and Julia Boerigter of Holland, Michigan. He attended Holland High School and then Hope College. While still at Hope he met the love of his life, Sibilla DeHoog, a Calvin graduate and a school teacher in Culterville at the time. They were married on December 23, 1958. While still attending Hope College, their oldest son, James Calvin was born in March of 1960.
After graduating from Hope, George attended the University of Southern California for his Masters in Public Administration. While at USC, George and Sibilla had their second son, Stephen Troy. With an MPA nearly complete, George felt called to the ministry, following in the footsteps of his oldest brother Jack. They returned to Holland, Michigan so George could attend Western Theological Seminary. While there George and Sibilla welcomed their third son Daniel West.
After seminary, George took a call from Bethel Reformed Church in Sterling, Illinois. Three years later he was called to pastor a congregation in downtown Muskegon, Michigan and served the Central Reformed Church until 1977. In 1978, George left the ministry to pursue his goal of utilizing his business skills while sharing his faith and commitment with others and creating an impact on the whole community. His first stop was Herman Miller where he met some of those people who have remained his close friends to this day. Later, he worked at several different companies and observed how a place of employment can change people's daily life for the better. He worked at Structural Concepts in Spring Lake, Eggers Industries in Wisconsin and Zondervan Publishing in Grand Rapids with a few other stops along the way.
In 1992 while at Central Church in Grand Rapids, he heard of an opportunity to help a small business with 2 employees making motorcycle cruise controls. He decided to jump in and with the mentorship of his brother Paul, he was able to transform that tiny business to what today is SoundOff Signal in Hudsonville, MI.
The company now employs over 500 people and is a world leader in emergency lighting equipment. Along the way George, in large part because of his combination of business acumen and his commitment to personal relationships, made business partners but also personal friends all over the world, including China, Taiwan, United Kingdom, Sweden, Poland and Greece. The business became so successful in part because George’s goal was to treat the employees like he would his parishioners.
Starting in 2008, George and Sibilla enjoyed several years of winters in Albuquerque, New Mexico where they became very involved in both their church and in the community. It also allowed them to spend time with their son Steve and his family who lived in Los Alamos.
In 2019 they returned home to Holland and moved into Freedom Village. This allowed them to become avid supporters for all things Hope College, Calvin College and Western Seminary. George also relished his ability to use his success to help others who needed a boost in their life or career as well as try to make a difference in the community that he lived in both with his time and his financial commitments.
George tried to live every day of his life committed to his Lord Jesus Christ and to Sibilla, his wife of 67 years. He will also be greatly missed by his oldest son, James and his wife Letitia and their son, Calvin and his husband Ryan; son Stephen and his wife Kathleen and their three daughters, Rebecca and her husband Jason Lengyel and their four children, Kimberly and her husband Gerritt and Michelle; and Daniel and his wife Christina and their two sons Peter and Steven.
The family will receive visitors on Sunday, March 1, from 4:00pm to 7:00pm, at the Dykstra Funeral Home – Mulder Chapel, 188 W 32nd Street, Holland. A memorial service will take place on Monday, March 2 at 11:00am at Hope Church, 77 W 11th Street, Holland, with Dr. Felix Theonugraha and Gretchen Schoon-Tanis officiating.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Homecor (96 West 15th Street, Suite 202, Holland), or Community Action House (739 Paw Paw Drive, Holland).
For those who are unable to attend the service in person, a live stream will be available HERE
