Frederick Jay Koster, age 66, of Holland, passed away Friday, February 16, 2018. He was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on March 17, 1951. After graduating from high school Fred attended Michigan State University for several years. He served in wartime and is a veteran of the Vietnam War. His commendations and medals include a National Defense Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, and a Sharpshooter Badge. After serving his nation as a Recon Marine in wartime Mr. Koster served his community as a police officer and paramedic in the city of Lowell, Michigan for many years. It was his compassion for people that led him to a career in law enforcement. He was known to pick up a strangers tab while dining out and he had a gregarious personality that could make people smile and laugh. Fred also enjoyed time on Lake Michigan with his family. He was baptized in Central Wesleyan Church 7 years ago along with his spouse.

Mr. Koster is survived by his wife, Karen; children, step-children, and grandchildren. Fred was laid to rest on Tuesday March 13, 2018, in Fort Custer National Cemetery, with full military honors bestowed by the United States Marine Corps and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

His virtues exceeded his failures.
