Life Story / Obituary

William Douglas “Doug” Hennessey of Hamilton, Mich. passed away January 29, 2020 at Spectrum Health Blodgett Hospital in East Grand Rapids, Mich. He was 63.

He was born Aug. 9, 1956 in Piqua, Ohio to William H. “Bill” Hennessey and the late Barbara Louise Hennessey, who preceded him in death.

Doug was a family man first, a lover of anything on the water of Michigan lakes and had a witty personality and great sense of humor. He loved sailing, water skiing and pontoon rides on Lake Columbia in Brooklyn, Mich., where he spent most of his life raising a family.

Raised in Celina, Ohio, Doug’s life work was rooted in agriculture and conservation of the land. He had a successful career as a traveling farm equipment salesman, selling tractors, combines and planters to farmers in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York.

Doug is survived his wife, Peggy Ann Hennessey. They had 39 beautiful years together building a close-knit family and had moved to West Michigan to be closer to his other love: his Lake Michigan-cruising boat, the Slip Away. Doug’s world revolved around his children. He’s survived by daughters Megan Hennessey, Caitlin Livengood (Darrin) and granddaughter Ella and Heather Rock (Jason) and grandson Tony. He cherished Ella and Tony during his final years on this earth. Doug also is survived by his father, Bill, and sisters Susan Thomas (Ray), Karen Hennessey and Nancy Hennessey.

He was a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 091-22-5 in Jackson, Mich. and Tower Harbour Marina Yacht Club in Douglas, Mich.

A memorial visitation will be 2-4 pm Saturday (February 8) at the Dykstra Funeral Home-Saugatuck Chapel, 520 Lake Street.

A Celebration Of Life will be held from 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM following the visitation at "A Cut Above" - 6080 Blue Star Hwy; Saugatuck, Mi 49453.

In lieu of flowers, the Hennessey family asks that donations be made in Doug’s memory to a fund to support his great nephew’s Liam Walker’s special needs online at supportliamwalker.org or by writing to 310 Erickson Drive, Oxford, Ohio 45056.
