Carol Mae (Applin) Mapes, 85, of Holland, formerly of the Adrian area, died Friday, August 18, 2017.

Carol was born in Iron River, Michigan, on July 29, 1932, to William R. and Mae (Putz) Applin. She graduated from Onsted High School in 1950 and in 1954, married her high school sweetheart, Roger Mapes, at St. Joseph’s Shrine in Irish Hills, Michigan. Carol and her family lived in the Adrian area until 1978 and then moved to Holland. She was a charter member and faithful parishioner of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church. Carol worked in accounting at the Ottawa Area Intermediate School District for 10 years prior to her retirement in 1992. After retiring, Carol volunteered at Holland Hospital, primarily with the Lights of Love Campaign and keeping the accounts for the hospital gift and coffee shops.

Carol was a kind, devoted, and loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, and friend and demonstrated this, in part, by sending everyone she loved birthday cards, without fail, year after year. She was known for her delicious homemade goodies, including rolls, cookies, pancakes, pies, and applesauce. During baseball season, Carol enjoyed watching Tiger games or listening on the radio.

Carol was preceded in death by her husband, Roger, their son, James, her parents, and her brother, William Applin.

Carol is survived by 6 sons and 2 daughters, Charles and Jennifer Mapes of Holland, Daniel and Ann Mapes of Grand Haven, Janice and Timothy Kistka of Kalamazoo, Jerald Mapes of Holland, Jeffrey Mapes of Kalamazoo, Paul and Pamela Mapes of Holland, John Mapes of Holland, and Jennifer and Paul Sanders of Houghton; daughter-in-law Beverly Mapes of East Grand Rapids; 25 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; her brothers, Dean (Andrea) Applin and Richard (Sherryl) Applin; her sisters, Margaret Applin-Martin and Jane Applin; her brothers- and sisters-in-law, Norma and Alan Campbell, Myrtle Mapes, and William and Rebecca Mapes; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; and her aunts and uncles Lorraine Applin, Anne Applin, Betty Applin, and Geraldine and Joe Schober.

A Funeral Mass celebrating Carol’s life will be held at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, August 23, 2017 at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, 480 152nd Ave., Holland, with Father Mike Cilibraise officiating. Burial will be at Lakewood Cemetery. A luncheon will follow the burial.

Friends may call on the family on Tuesday, August 22, 2017, from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM with wake prayers at 7:30 PM at Dykstra Funeral Home – Northwood Chapel, 295 Douglas Avenue in Holland.
