Life Story / Obituary
Anne Richter, age 99 of Holland, passed away Sunday, May 13, 2012 at The Inn at Freedom Village.
Born in Delaware, OH, Anne took up painting at a young age, and continued painting her entire life.
As a student at Saugatuck High School, Anne participated in poster contests, where students would display their creative and artistic Skills. It was here she made the acquaintance of one of the judges, Frederick Fursman, a notable painter and art teacher from whom she was granted a scholarship to Oxbow Summer School of Art in Saugatuck. Invited to live in the lighthouse by the old Saugatuck channel that passed by the school, Anne would figure paint oils in the morning and paint watercolor in the afternoon.
Another of Anne's fondest memories is of a summer spent touring Ohio and Indiana, as part of a small, traveling summer theater group.
Anne graduated from Oberlin College in 1935 and immediately traveled abroad, spending the summer of 1936 in Europe.
Beginning in England she spent several weeks traveling the continent and visited many places in France and Italy in the years immediately preceding the war.
Upon returning from Europe, Anne began the career of teaching which would comprise the next 45 years of her life. Beginning with the Dallas Country Day School in Texas, Anne taught grades one through three for two years and eventually returned to Michigan, where she would teach at both Northport and Sturgis.
Anne loved to read, chat with friends, or just enjoy a program on television.
She was a wonderful conversationalist.
No services or visitation are scheduled.
